The Mill

Woodson’s Mill

Deep Roots Milling operates out of historic Woodson’s Mill in Nelson County VA. Woodson’s Mill was originally built in the 1790’s and has been in continual operation throughout the majority of its history. For much of America’s history, mills like Woodson’s dotted the landscape and served vital community roles. However, with the commercialization of the modern food system, these country mills could not compete and most were abandoned and left to fall apart. Woodson’s Mill is one of the last of these gems and we are excited to give it new life.

Powered by Renewable Energy

Using water-power to grind our grains takes advantage of the lessons learned by generations of millers, but the process is also inherently environmentally sustainable. Woodson’s Mill is an example of the engineering ingenuity of the past and is the last commercially operated water powered mill in the state. It serves as a vital piece of the local agricultural community.

Stone Ground

We use 48 inch stones that were installed in the mill back in the 1840’s. These remarkable stones produce high quality products packed with flavor and nutrients.
