Slice Versa- a mobile wood-fired pizza shop in Central Virginia

“When I heard about Deep Roots, I just got really excited. I felt like I wandered into a gold mine because I’d been looking for this kind of flour for years and years. I just had to start making pizza.”

-Aaron Hill

Slice Versa started as a peculiar obsession with pizza. Aaron Hill had made pizza for years, but it wasn’t until he tried some local, stoneground flour from Deep Roots that his enthusiasm blossomed into a business. Aaron recalls that making dough with local, artisan flour catapulted his excitement up to and past the point of making it a career. Now Aaron and Emma Hill have both abandoned their 9-5s to jump with both feet into their passion project that is exciting taste buds around Charlottesville and the surrounding counties.

Dough is the foundation of any great pizza and the foundation of Slice Versa. The mobile kitchen makes naturally leavened, stone-ground sourdough with Deep Roots flour, mixing about 90% Silver Bread with about 10% Rye and adding a sprinkle of cornmeal on the peel to help the dough slide. The pies are baked in their portable, wood-fired brick oven with a mouth-watering combination of flavors. From field to plate, every pizza is made with a personal touch.

For a wild, off-beat, and deeply gratifying bite, try their black walnut pizza. For this pie, the base crust is topped with buffalo feta cheese which gives a creamier texture to balance the crunch of foraged native black walnuts. The dough is finished with black walnut oil and parmesan and baked until the nuts are toasted and the crust is crispy, offering a uniquely Appalachian flavor.
