As its name suggests, Reunion Bakery is a place to come back to and a pitstop for locals in downtown Staunton, VA. Patrons pack the small lobby for a mouthful of artisan croissants filled with almond or chocolate, cruffins, cinnamon rolls, or chocolate financiers made with almond and buckwheat flour. Inspired by travels in France, the French-style bakery’s foundation is its delicate pastries with glossy, laminated dough and buttery aromas that waft over the counter.

Later to arrive, in 2020, was Reunion’s hardier sourdough bread program. The slow-fermented loaves rely heavily on local grains, as the primary ingredient, for superior flavor, texture, and richness. As the only location for naturally leavened bread in Staunton, the sourdough styles offer something truly special. Made, in part, with Deep Roots flour, the sturdier loaves have been a success.

Reunion’s porridge loaf in particular is a hefty and deeply satisfying sourdough. The loaf combines Deep Roots spelt flour with whole wheat flour, white flour, and rye and fermented overnight. A coating of seeds—oatmeal, pumpkin, sunflower, poppy, sesame—adds a crispy crunch to each bite. Dark in color and heavy in flavor, the porridge loaf is a meal on its own.
