Great Day Gardens

Stone milling gives you more flavor and better nutrition. Educating customers about local grains is a process, but the first, most important thing is just to provide them with something that tastes really great and is memorable and they want to come back again regardless.
— Michael Grantz

A loaf of bread from Great Day Gardens is about as local as you can get. The 24 acre farm grows vegetables, collects seed, and produces some of the grain that goes into their bread, which means that some of those loaves are grown, milled, and eaten within 50 miles.

Since 2015, the on-farm bakery has been bringing local, stoneground sourdough to the Lynchburg area at the Lynchburg Community Market. Husband and wife duo, Michael Grantz and Arden Jones started out with an interest in sustainability and restorative agriculture which has motivated their interest in locally grown, stoneground grains and naturally leavened, wood fired bread. As of 2022, Great Day Gardens has been using 100% Deep Roots Milling flour.

Great Day Gardens has a rotating list of specialty loaves, but to get a unique taste of the medley of local grains, try their staple, pain au levain. This light, crispy bread contains two types of wheat, rye, spelt, and malted barley, so four grains all together.
